Royal Liverpool Hospital
My aim for these artworks was to create a series of multi layered screen prints which act like windows to the outside world. The prints can be viewed at a distance acting like at a glance outside but also contain lots of small details which hopefully can draw people in and can be enjoyed over time, finding new things to look at.
I started by wanting to reflect the rich diversity of flora and fauna which can be found in the area. I spent time researching the different birds and plants that can be found in the local environment and visited the Dee Estuary where I drew on location, observing egrets, swans, oystercatchers, avocets and redshanks amongst many other birds.
I also visited Southport Pier where I was inspired by the shells and sand and plants found along the coast including bladder campion, fox and cubs, yellow flag iris, primroses, wild roses and many other native plants and trees. I wanted to convey a variety the different habitats where you can experience the different species so I focused the series on hedgerows, the sea shore and wetland areas.
I hope the series of prints create a sense of familiarity but also introduce elements that encourage calm, positive feelings and allow patients to think beyond the walls of the waiting room.
